Our Ship Came in... BUT...

written on 09-25-17

So our ship came in, I was contacted to be advised our container was here!!!
(Insert Happy Dance and Cheering here)

So I gathered up the required documents, and took a spin down to the shipping office, I sat with my girl Nicole we had been emailing back and forth for a day or two getting everything together, I wanted to make sure I dotted all my i's and crossed my t's because that is who I am, I like to be prepared.  I am used to taking care of business.

So there I sat with all my documents, dressed rather snazzy if I do say so myself, poised and ready for any question they had of me.  Then I was taken to a different office and here is where I got the big BUT... (insert shock and awe here)

T: Mrs DaRosa, all these documents are in your name?
M: well yes it is my stuff
T: But you are not an expat we need the expat
M: well yes, I am here with my husband who is here on a contract
T: Well then you are nothing, we need your husband with the work visa to come down, the only problem is that the container is in your name not your husbands.... blah, blah, blah, yada yada

To be honest I kind of stop listening after I was told I was nothing... I know she didn't mean that, she just needed to deal with the man with the paperwork, which I am fine with and understand, this is a process, and so this is what I learned about importing your goods into Jamaica...

1. Be sure it is shipped in the name of the person with the Work Permit
2. If you are in a hurry for your goods, don't be.
3. 10 days waiting period once all paperwork is submitted to clear customs
4. Know all import laws and do not trust your movers/shippers to know and follow those laws!!

So now we continue to wait, our move in date of October 1st is now slipping away, and we are at the mercy of the moving and shipping company to fix and resubmit our documents before we can even consider when a move in date might be.

I do not blame anyone here on the Jamaican side for this issue, they are just following their protocol, but I am upset with a company that I trusted to handle our move and know and understand what that entails.

So, today I am poolside realizing that I can not control all things, and no mater how often I have taken care of business in the past, it will be different here.
